WHITWORTH
Counselling and psychotherapy for individuals and couples in South-East London.
“It is joy to be hidden but disaster not to be found” - D.W. Winnicott
Life is full of challenges, some of which are harder to overcome than others.
Therapy is a space unlike any other: a safe, non-judgmental, confidential place in which we will look together at those challenges and find a way of working either through or with them.
ABOUT ME
I am a BACP registered therapist, working with individuals and couples in person and online.
Before training in psychotherapy, I spent 10 years working in the music industry, first as a touring musician and then within a record label. Music was a valuable outlet and means of expression for me; I maintain a belief in its extraordinary powers of healing, communication and catharsis. When I began my own therapy journey, I discovered that therapy too had these powers. But, uniquely, it also provides the opportunity for meaning-making through dialogue with a trusted other. This is the space that I seek to create in my practice.
I have experience working with people in crisis, short-term solution focused counselling and long-term exploratory psychotherapy. This experience has come from my work with the NHS, other mental health providers and the Samaritans.
My work has included depression, anxiety, relationship problems, bereavement, domestic abuse, parenting, low self-esteem, perfectionism, substance abuse, loneliness, creative blocks and reaching creative potential.
I am registered with the BACP and abide by the BACP code of ethics and practice.

HOW IT WORKS
My personal view of therapy is that there is no single approach that works for everyone, which is why I chose to train in Integrative Psychotherapy.
I work relationally, meaning that I am interested in how we relate to ourselves and others. These relationships might be from our past, or our present. Often it is both.
We will seek to understand fixed behavioural and relational patterns so that new possibilities can emerge.
Some key theories and ideas for me include:
Existential - finding the meaning and purpose in our lives, particularly when confronted by challenges which make us question these.
Psychodynamic - looking at our early caregiver relationships and unresolved childhood issues and how these affect us in the present day.
Humanistic - creating the conditions in which we can safely explore our blocks to growth and achieving our potential.
Psychotherapy is about extraordinary conversations, separate to but not removed from our day-to-day lives. Together we will find a way of looking at your challenges.
COUPLES THERAPY
Therapy can be a neutral and protected space for couples to confront their challenges together.
The aim of couples therapy is to allow you to communicate more effectively and meaningfully with each other, so that you might better hear and be heard by your partner.
Issues that might bring a couple to therapy include infidelity, loss of sex drive, loss of intimacy, navigating significant life changes, parenting, illness, sexuality and gender questions, substance abuse, pornography/sex addiction, navigating consensual non-monogamy and, above all, communication issues.
Couples therapy can take place weekly or fortnightly. Please reach out for information on how couples therapy works in practice, and how it might be able to help with issues arising in your relationship.
